This is an unpaid internship.  Everyone is welcome to apply, regardless of student status.

 

NoCo Press is a learning cooperative, meaning that interns and authors review and edit manuscripts, and participate in a book's entire lifecycle.

Colorado State University and University of Northern Colorado students, please apply through Handshake. For academic credit, please arrange with your school's internship coordinator.   All majors are welcome to apply.

In this two-semester program, interns will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of book publishing. Each intern will be in charge of one manuscript for its lifecycle, though all interns will participate in the editing, review, and design of all books currently in progress. 

​

The fall semester will involve early editing phases and cover design, culminating with an order for advance review copies of the book. The spring semester will involve secondary editing and cover re-design, culminating with final book product for distribution.

Qualifications

• Willingness to read and develop any genre of book assigned

• Meticulous attention to detail

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Mature ability to provide and receive feedback

• Exceptional ability to meet deadlines

• Significant knowledge of grammar, syntax, and style

• Basic knowledge of copyediting symbols and legible handwriting

• Touch-type capability of at least 40 wpm

• Skilled in Windows, Mac OS, Microsoft Office, document sharing, online meetings

• Love of books and enthusiasm to get local writers into print

• Professionalism and seriousness in working with authors to fulfill their dream

 

Expectations

• Commit to 5+ hours/week for the fall and spring semesters, breaks excluded

• Meet weekly with the managing editor and sometimes the authors; no meetings during breaks

• Adhere to our no-tolerance, no-A.I.-assistance policy for editing, writing, or art generation (with the exception of spell checking, grammar checking, and photo/art enhancing)

 

2026 fall schedule:

Early September:  first meeting; assign manuscripts

September:  first book rotation; author contracts

October:  second book rotation; determine book size/font/etc., cover design

November:  third book rotation; file for copyrights

November 21-29:  Thanksgiving break

December:  upload and layout in book formatting program

December 11:  send proof copies to printer

 

2027 spring schedule:

Mid-January:  first meeting; receive review copies

Late January:  first book rotation; peer reviews

Early February:  second book rotation; cover revisions

Late February:  third book rotation; cover revisions

March:  finalize revisions; ISBNs 

March 12:  send 2nd round proof copies to printer

March 13 – 21:  spring break

Late March:  royalties and distribution channels

April:  review and finalize covers and books; convert to e-books

April 27:  send final books to printer

May:  develop marketing & promotion plan

Mid-late May:  final books arrive

 

Optional summer 2027 schedule:

May:  promote book online and in news outlets

June:  books events in Northern Colorado

July:  books events in metro Denver
